When you pour a hot beverage into a mug, you trust it’ll hold your drink safely. However, not all mugs are created equal, and some may pose a risk if they cannot withstand high temperatures.
Nestlé USA has issued a recall for over 440,000 Starbucks-branded mugs over risks that the mugs could shatter when filled with extremely hot liquids or microwaved. According to the distributor, it had received 12 incident reports of the mugs overheating or breaking, resulting in 10 injuries – nine severe burn injuries and one finger cut.
The ceramic mugs have a distinctive metallic coating. Target and Walmart sold the mugs in gift sets during last year’s holiday season. Nestlé USA recommended that consumers stop using the mugs and either return them to the store or contact the company for a full refund.
Scalding and laceration hazards
Scalding occurs when hot liquid burns the skin, leading to painful injuries and, in severe cases, require surgical treatment. Lacerations from shattered mug pieces can also be serious, potentially causing nerve damage or requiring stitches.
