What are the most common childhood injuries?

On Behalf of | May 27, 2020 | Personal Injury |

Children represent one of the most vulnerable demographics in Indiana. They also tend to suffer from some injuries more than others, such as dog bites. Not surprisingly, you and many other parents might want to know the specific instances you need to protect your children from.

Knowing the risks your children might face helps make it easier for you to erect barriers that protect them. While there is no foolproof way to keep them safe from personal injuries, it is a good starting point.

Like seniors, children do not handle falls well. The CDC estimates that falls are the leading cause of nonfatal injury in children. Overall, parents and other guardians rush 2.8 million children to the emergency room for fall-related injuries each year.

Animal attacks

This includes not just attacks from dogs but other animals as well. Animals that sting also fall into this category. This remains one of the two leading causes of non-fatal injuries for children between 0 to 9 years of age.

Struck by objects

This is the second leading cause of injuries for children between the ages of 0 and 9. This includes not just when someone throws an object at the child or an object falls onto the child, but also when the child hits an object with a strong force. This might result from sports or bullying.

Car accidents

For children of ages 15 to 19, car crashes remain one of the most common causes of nonfatal injuries. In fact, car crash injuries seem to affect this age group more than any other. One reason for this is that children in this age group are now old enough to drive but are still learning.

While knowing the general risks can help, it is also important to pay attention to your child’s lifestyle. For instance, children who play sports, remain active and have legal access to a vehicle they can drive might face a higher risk of injuries related to these specific instances compared to others.
