Data on older adults and traffic crashes

On Behalf of | Nov 6, 2021 | Car Accidents |

If you worry about your safety behind the wheel as an older adult, or while riding in a vehicle, it is important to review various risk factors associated with motor vehicle collisions. Every year, many older adults find themselves seriously hurt and even killed in crashes across the country. Moreover, when collisions involving older adults take place, those involved are especially likely to suffer devastating consequences.

Sadly, these accidents continue to shatter lives on a daily basis. Negligent drivers who cause victims of any age to suffer significant injuries or even lose their lives must answer for the consequences of their actions.

Statistics on older adults and traffic crash injuries and deaths

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that during 2018, over 250,000 older adults (those 65 and over) received treatment in emergency departments as a result of injuries they sustained in traffic accidents. During the same year, motor vehicle collisions claimed the lives of close to 7,700 older adults as well.

To look at these statistics in another way, roughly 700 older adults suffered injuries and over 20 lost their lives in traffic accidents across the U.S. each day.

Older adults and traffic crash risk factors

The CDC states that more older adult drivers lose their lives in traffic crashes when compared to middle-aged drivers, and men are more likely to pass away than women. Older drivers should watch out for age-related cognitive decline and vision problems, but many find themselves in accidents that occur as a result of the negligence of another motorist, such as someone who uses their phone on the road or drinks alcohol before driving.

All drivers, regardless of age, should follow the applicable laws, maintain reasonable speeds and avoid distractions to help protect themselves and others while on the road.
