Mistakes that could cause you to crash with a truck

On Behalf of | May 12, 2020 | Truck Accidents |

It is easy to fall into the motion of driving and sort of “forget” what you are actually doing. Because distractions are so prevalent, you may find your focus wandering only to snap back into awareness when you recognize a road hazard.

Staying vigilant, especially when driving around big trucks is imperative to your safety. Your awareness of which driving behaviors may mistakenly put your life at risk around a semi-truck is helpful so you can prevent unnecessary accidents from happening.

Behaviors to avoid

According to the United States Department of Transportation, Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, dangerous and reckless behaviors that you should avoid include the following:

  • Switching lanes immediately in front of a big truck: Cutting off a big rig is incredibly dangerous as it takes them much longer to stop because of the sheer size and weight of the vehicle. If you pull out in front of them, a hit from behind may leave you seriously injured or killed.
  • Leaving too little room for turning: Unlike your vehicle, a big truck requires exponentially more space to turn. If you see a truck approaching with its blinker on, kindly hold back enough that it has room to turn.
  • Hiding in the blind spot: Trucks have larger blind spots than smaller passenger vehicles. When you are passing a semi, be aware not to stall for too long when you are alongside the truck. Rather, make your move efficiently and stay behind far enough or pull forward enough in the adjacent lane so the truck driver sees you.

Coping with a severe injury

If your involvement in an accident with a truck has left you with a severe injury, your life may look different now than it did before your accident. Despite the changes and your emotions, your resolve to be persistent and determined may help you to overcome your injury and move forward with hope.
