How should I handle a tailgater?

On Behalf of | Dec 12, 2019 | Car Accidents |

You have probably been in the situation before where you are driving down the road and someone starts following you too closely. Having another vehicle right on the back of yours is unsettling for many reasons. Most of all, it is an accident waiting to happen. When someone follows too closely, they reduce the time they have to react to whatever the car in front does. This is an easy way to cause a rear end crash. While you may have your own ways of handling a tailgater, there is some advice on how to do it safely so you do not become an Indiana accident statistic.

For many people, the first reaction to a tailgater is to get angry. However, that will not fix the situation and could put you at greater risk of an accident because instead of focusing on driving, you are focusing on the person behind you. A better solution, according to WorkersCompensation.com, is to slow down. If the person wants to pass you, he or she can more easily do so once you slow your speed. You might also want to pull over and let the person pass you if you do not feel safe about him or her passing you while you remain on the road.

You also need to allow more space between you and the car in front of you. This gives you more reaction time so you can warn the driver behind you and avoid a rear end crash.

One of the worst things to do is to speed up. Not only will you risk getting a speeding ticket but the person behind you will probably just speed up to match you without backing off. This information is for education and is not legal advice.
